HOW IT ALL BEGAN
In 2006, I began teaching an International Relations course at CdM. The course was extremely impactful for the students in the class and looked to be in on its way to becoming a regular school offering until budget cuts reprioritized campus electives. On the heels of the creation of the Performing and Multi-Media Academy, PAMA, the first in what would become many proposals for a global studies academy began. Each year thereafter I pitched the academy proposal and pushed for the creation of a geography course and resurrection of International Relations.
Beginning in 2012, NMUSD began looking to implement 2 academies at each of the high schools which breathed new life into the academy proposal. With a change in administration, there was new momentum and support for the idea of a global studies academy and in 2013 we began to put the proposal into action. After almost a decade of nurturing the idea of the academy, by the 2014-2015 school year we welcomed the first Academy of Global Studies students and the first academy courses were offered. In 2018, we welcomed the first AGS graduating class!
