HOW IT ALL BEGAN
In 2006, I began teaching an International Relations course at CdM. The course was extremely impactful for the students in the class and looked to be in on its way to becoming a regular school offering until budget cuts reprioritized campus electives. On the heels of the creation of the Performing and Multi-Media Academy, PAMA, the first in what would become many proposals for a global studies academy began. Each year thereafter I pitched the academy proposal and pushed for the creation of a geography course and resurrection of International Relations.
Beginning in 2012, NMUSD began looking to implement 2 academies at each of the high schools which breathed new life into the academy proposal. With a change in administration, there was new momentum and support for the idea of a global studies academy and in 2013 we began to put the proposal into action, met with committees of parents, teachers, students, and the community. We piloted our first AGS courses in 2013-2014. After almost a decade of nurturing the idea of the academy, we welcomed the first Academy of Global Studies students and the Academy was born. Since then we have graduated many successful students, traveled the world, and won lots of accolades and recognition.
